Leaching in
The story of Western Lake Erie water is know: large-scale animal feed lots (CAFOs) produce phosphorus-laden manure which is spread on fields, then hits waterways bound for Lake Erie. In the lake, the phosphorus feeds a sprawling algae blanket, producing Microcystin.
What is Microcystin?
An exceptionally poisonous chemical that causes diarrhea, vomiting and liver problems (after long exposure).
One Ohio State University Stone Lab/Ohio EPA study measured the toxicity of a number of poisons on lab rats, finding Microcystin more toxic than…
- PCBs
- Methylmercury
- DDT
- Chlorine, and
- Cyanide.
