Leave no one behind

For some, reading is a pleasure and for others, it’s a skill that is difficult to understand. It’s also a skill that may keep children out of trouble — 65 percent of all state and federal inmates can be classified as low literate.Illiteracy has been linked to extreme poverty and preventable infectious diseases. In its 25th year, Read For Literacy is looking for volunteers to help children, as well as adults, enhance their reading abilities. Most volunteers devote 60 to 90 minutes a week either with an adult, focusing on enhancing reading or overall English competencies, or with children in grades pre-school through kindergarten, reading and discussing books.
