Gaming it Oldschool

Tired of the same old activities? Looking for something new and fun to do with friends and family? The solution may be at your own table.

Old School Gaming, a local Toledo business specializing in tabletop games, has opened a new storefront space which promises to be a bastion for tabletop games of all styles and flavors in the greater Toledo area. Their broad selection of gaming products include accessories for board games, trading cards, miniature wargaming, roleplaying games, and more. Most importantly, Old School Gaming offers Toledo a great gaming space, which according to owner Randall Switlick, promises to “bring it [tabletop gaming] back into the mainstream.”

What’s your game?

Switlick started Old School Gaming as a website offering fine tabletop gaming products since 2010. It began with Magic the Gathering but quickly expanded to include board games and other types of tabletop games as well. The most exciting aspect of this unique business is their store in south Toledo which opened on April 1. The store is spacious and brightly lit, offering a wide open setting with tables intended for various types of games. There are tables for card games, board games, and even an elaborate and impressive table for miniature war games like Warhammer 40K. Fans of Warhammer will be impressed by the best wargaming table in the area, complete with interchangeable custom designed terrain pieces. Most importantly, Old School Gaming offers a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for new players and veterans alike to play the games they love as well as to discover new games. Their friendly and knowledgeable staff encourages visitors to use the store’s facilities to test games which interest them. Switlick says, “we want people to come in at any time and play whatever they want.” If you want to find out if a specific game is right for you, the staff will help you decide.

The “Magic” of gathering at the table

The crucial difference between tabletop gaming and video games is the social  aspect. The magic of tabletop gaming is in the community it fosters. The space at Old School Gaming is focused on revitalizing this kind of socially active gaming which builds up the community and encourages participation in collaborative hobbies. In a world where technology often isolates people, limiting face to face interaction, tabletop gaming is an excellent solution. Old School Gaming only carries games where “you can sit down and actually interact with somebody.”

Whether you’re interested in Magic the Gathering, Warhammer 40k, Risk, or Dungeons & Dragons, Old School Gaming offers a vast selection of products to chose from. Old School Gaming also sells other popular trading card games including Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon. They also carry lines of miniature wargaming figures such as Warmachine/Hordes and HeroClix. From European style games like Settlers of Catan to innovative games like Pandemic, their board game selection offers something for everyone from a diverse line of unique and independent board games which “you won’t find in stores.” They also actively buy Magic the Gathering cards as well some other popular lines.

All are welcome

The staff of Old School Gaming emphasizes that fostering a safe and inviting atmosphere is one of their primary focuses. Attendees of gaming events who behave in an aggressive, unwelcoming, or otherwise inappropriate manner are promptly asked to leave. All first time customers get a 20% discount on most items, excluding individual trading cards, so be sure to let the staff know if it is your first visit.
