Bluegrass for Veterans

Get ready to celebrate springtime with some fun, lively, bluegrass music. The American Legion Post 514 will host their 2nd Annual Bluegrass Jamboree on Saturday, March 12.

The event will feature a diverse selection of local bluegrass bands including Harbourtown Bluegrass, Red White Bluegrass, and Hand Hewn String Band. The purpose of the event is to provide much needed support for veterans.

The Cause

According to the Legion Post adjutant and MC of the event Gary LaMunyon, “The mission is to raise money to help Veterans Affairs,” and to “address PTSD for veterans and active military.” Proceeds from the event will go to organizations such as Vetdogs “who train dogs for disabled veterans.” According to LaMunyon, “we also contribute to Rainbow Coalition and Ronald McDonald House.” He continued, “also in our local communities we’ve helped veterans with such things as their heating bills.” Emphasizing the difficulties many veterans face in finding appropriate care, “usually there is some medical reason for it,” said LaMunyon.

The Jamboree

Each band will play two hour long sets, providing a full day of entertainment and dancing. There will even be space at the end for an open jam, time permitting. The American Legion Post 514 is the perfect location musical festivities. According to LaMunyon, “The hall was built in 1921 and it’s very rustic, it’s got that country feel.” The event was a huge success last year. “We had over 200 people and they were dancing in the aisles,” said LaMunyon. “It’s foot stompin’ music,” so get ready to put on your finest western garb and let loose. The styles of bluegrass will be varied but consistent in what folks love about bluegrass music. “It runs the gamut, but to me the most prominent instrument seems to be the banjo.” And the musicians are certainly virtuosic in their skills. “They’re some great pickers, I don’t know how they move their fingers that fast,” said LaMunyon. The event will be limited to 300 tickets, so if you are interested in going, act now. The event will have a cash bar and concession stand.

If you’re a fan of bluegrass, country, or folk music, this is the perfect event for you. The fantastic selection of bluegrass bands will be worth the drive. Show your support for our veterans while having a great time and stomping your feet. The crisp spring weather is the perfect excuse to come out for some lively, all American old time string band music.

2pm/doors, 3pm/show, Saturday, March 12. $10/advance, $12/at the door, a block of 8 tickets to reserve a table.
To inquire about tickets, contact Gary LaMunyon at 734-347-4110. American Legion Post 514 11601 Lewis Ave., Ida.
