When Barb Sabin's son Patrick became an adult, she had more concerns than the average mother about his success. Patrick's autism presented an obstacle to finding a vocational or training program that would work for him. Rather than lament the limited opportunities, Sabin got inspired and started Green Options for Autism of Lucas County, a school for students ages 5 through 22, and an adult services program.
"They need a program designed around them — they don't need to be fit into a program," Sabin says. "The theme was green options because I wanted it to be environmentally focused. " Students perform jobs centered around the green mantra- reduce, reuse and recycle – in a greenhouse and other earth-conscious locations.
"I think it gives them purpose, it gives them something to look forward to," Sabin says. "It's not about the paycheck — they just want to be thought of as an equal member of society, as they are."
