Local non-profit Food for Thought is starting a new series of events to engage the local food community in the fight against hunger. "Dine Thoughtfully" events will consist of fundraisers catered by local socially-conscious restaurants and food vendors looking to interact with local foodies. The first of such events, the Balcony Buffet Brunch, takes place Saturday, August 22 at the Trinity Episcopal Church.
This series is the culmination of previous events and sponsors of Food for Thought, explained Jill Bunge, director of the organization: “Food For Thought has had tremendous success with Jam City (PB&J competition) over the past three years; not only are we blown away by the creativity and caliber of food each year, but by all our participants' and sponsors' generosity and thoughtfulness.” Eventually FFT got in touch with the various participants to see if they’d be willing to collaborate together again for a series of meals that would raise awareness of the organization’s efforts. These events would also highlight food insecurity among families in the Toledo area.
A Who's Who of Local Eateries
Participation is an important part of the Dine Thoughtfully series, as a good number of eateries were necessary to pull off the event. Providing the menu will be downtown favorite Manhattan's. "The Manhattan's crew will have full creative control of the food and beverage menu," Bunge explained. "They've been working with our partner, Friendship Farms (a share-based farm where the community can come together to raise organic vegetables) based in Waterville, to incorporate items that will be at their seasonal peak at the end of August." The menu will also boast baked goods from newly-opened All Crumbs Bakery, and Black Kite Coffee and Pies will provide the coffee.
The next event in the Dine Thoughtfully series will be a Holiday Dinner, followed by a series of seasonal events yet to be determined. Bunge hopes that these events will bring other organizations into the fold. “Food For Thought welcomes anyone with interest to get involved! Butchers, bakers, candlestick makers…we look forward to exploring new partnerships with people who love food and are passionate about helping people in their community." If you'd like to help out, send a message to [email protected], or take part in what will surely be a delicious and insightful time at the Balcony Buffet Brunch.
