Homer Yarrito of Homer's Cycles on Harlem St. in Toledo, with Butch Tolles
Day Trippers
Almost every Sunday(April through October), Butch Tolles and Fred Ickes, and all their friends, fuel up their motorcycles to take an Ohio or Michigan ride. These day trips provide a fun way to keep the group connected. They discover new sights and routes traveling the way they like best, with spontaneity and good humor, for that ever sweet taste of open road freedom.
Favorite Sunday Rides (automobiles too!)
Butch recommends going up to Willis, MI via US 23 N to exit 31 and stopping at the haunted Bone Heads Bar B Que Restaurant (boneheadsinc.com 10256 Willis Rd. Willis MI).
The group takes their annual Leaf Ride to enjoy the gorgeous fall colors by heading toward Youngstown. “We never travel in a straight line; we go along Lake Erie for a while and then take the back roads making a stop at Quaker Steak & Lube 5150 Liberty Ave, in Vermillion on Rte 6.”
One of Fred’s favorite rides, especially in the fall, is along OH-13/SR13 to OH/US 250 through the Mansfield Area. “It is a laid back ride in beautiful Amish Country with hills and long sweeping curves” which leads to the outstanding 1,110 acre Mohican State Park at 3116 St Rte 3 Loudonville, OH. For park driving tour maps visit mohicanstatepark.org (Hey Mountain Bikers—the park has a advanced skill level, very challenging 25 mile mountain bike trial just waiting for you!)
Best Resources:
According to Butch a great local motorcycle shop is Homer’s Cycles (801 Galena St., Toledo 419-726-8645). “It is an authentic motorcycle shop –been there 50 years. Between Homer Yarrito (owner) and the staff, they know it all. Sheila can find any part old or new and Homer is also one of the last wheel spoke builders around—Harley Davidson shops send work to him,” says Butch.
To plan rides in Ohio or across the globe the guys use lets-ride.com, a world-wide motorcycle events, road rally and gathering resource with commentary from those who have been there and done that. Also check out thunderroadsohio.com and thunderroadsmichigan.com for statewide rides.
