You will do better in Toledo

TEDxToledo

"Ours is a city unlike any other. Some of the best artists, skilled laborers, and brightest minds you'll find anywhere call this home. There are many among us who remain hopeful, many who remain proud to be here. Indeed, we've had our challenges. I was born and raised here. I've seen how great we can be, and I'm a product of our promise." – Will Lucas, TEDxToledo Curator.

TEDxToledo was a truly inspiring meeting of some of Toledo's most innovative individuals. Toledoans from a mix of different fields, including: banking, environmental science, art, and law, to name a few came together to speak about the beauty and potential within the Glass City. While we can't wrap the day-long meeting into a single article, we will share some of our favorite ideas from the afternoon.

Toledo GROWs

Toledo GROWs is a community outreach program that provides the community with the resources to start bountiful community gardens. Another project associated with GROW is a partnership with the Juvenile Justice Division to provides adjudiciated kids and teens the opportunity to become involved with the gardens and construct green houses, coops, and picnic tables.

Community Culture and Diversity

Stephen Bennett, founder of Faces of the World, an organization dedicated to global awarness through cultural exchange and art education, and Ryan Bunch, the Performing & Literary Arts Coordinator at The Arts Commission, both expressed the importance of celebrating local art, music, heritage and culture.

Ryan Bunch [@KyruxMacist] has always wanted to live in a fun city

Help Portrait

Robin Charney gives Toledo's homeless community a face by photographing individuals each Saturday morning over PB&J. She also helped kickstart Help Portrait in Toledo. In December, professional photographers, makeup artists, and hair stylists gather to take free family portraits for less fortunate familes.

Buying Local

Chef Michael Bulkowski was the chef and owner of Revolver Restaurant where he sourced ingredients locally. He emphasizes a "local first" mentality to support the community we live in.
