Memories preserved in glass

The late Ralph Behrendt was loved throughout the community for his passion and dedication to the Toledo glass arts community. On Saturday, October 18, Gathered Art Gallery and Studios presented “Frozen Motion,” an exhibition and commemorative evening to honor Behrendt’s life and work. Support from local businesses aided the event, making for a festive and celebratory night.

Gathered owner Adam Goldberg knew Ralph Behrendt throughout his life. Behrendt’s work and home base, Studio B, originally peaked Adam’s interest in glass. Now a working glass artist and studio owner, Adam and the crew at Gathered have a sentimental and appreciative tie to Ralph’s legacy.

Some of Ralph’s works were on display in the gallery, with collaborative pieces from his Studio B. A silent auction for large pieces was during the evening. Smaller works at lower prices will be available for purchase at a later date.

Adam Goldberg, Eli Liman, Mike Stevens, and Larry Mack also performed studio demonstrations to showcase Ralph’s signature style.

As part of Ralph’s history in Toledo, Flying Rhino Coffee and Chocolate, the shop and roastery he originally opened with his wife, Gini, was an influence in beverages offered by Maumee Bay Brewing Company and The Attic on Adams.

Maumee Bay Brewing Company donated a micro-brew keg of a White Mocha Stout Scotch Ale created with coffee beans and cocoa nibs from the Behrendt’s roastery. The Attic on Adams served up a Flying Rhino Coffee-infused Jameson whiskey.

Proceeds benefited Flying Rhino Coffee and Chocolates.

The exhibition will be on display until the end of October, in tandem with The Arts Commission’s Month of Glass.
