After just under a week, Mayor D. Michael Collins’ proposal for food truck regulations has been stopped in it’s tracks by outraged members of the public. The Mayor’s proposal included expensive permits and location restrictions that would have spelled the end for most of Toledo’s mobile food fleet, according to food truck proponents. At yesterday’s council meeting, around ninety people filled the room to voice their opinions on the issue. The public show of support for the trucks was enough for council to decline a vote on the issue. Mayor Collins addressed council after the hearing, stating, “I am taking the legislation back. I will await further discussion. […] I clearly heard today the stakeholders want a part of it.” The city already has laws dictating the times food trucks can operate and that they must stay at least 100 feet from restaurants, two stipulations included in the squashed legislation yesterday. This is the end of one battle for the trucks but could be the start of a longer struggle between certain restaurants and their mobile competition.
