Built to chill

If you have driven by the Toledo Museum of Art sometime this past week, you might be alarmed.

“Construction? Seriously? Did some pipes burst? This isn’t winter. What is happening??”

Don’t worry. Play Time, TMA’s major summer exhibition, is not be halted: it is growing.

The large cranes, steel beams, and workers taking tools out of white vans might seem out of place in the tranquil environment by the sculpture garden, but only because they are visitors.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Redmoon Theater.

While some people follow the beat of their own drum, Redmoon Theater brings a tower.

Specifically, Redmoon Theater is bringing a large Drum Crane Tower, which is currently being assembled on-site on the terrace off of Monroe Street. The 30-foot tall musical structure will house multiple percussionists with three performance tiers and be decorated with newly minted glass domes created earlier this month at the TMA Glass Pavilion.

Redmoon Theater is in the Glass City as a temporary addition to Play Time’s initiative to promote fun, relaxation, leisure, and spark the imagination. With a mission of transforming the feel of a city through free, large-scale theatrical events, the community-minded, creative spirit is a perfect match for Play Time. Through play, we learn more about ourselves and each other, and Redmoon Theater’s creative concept rests on the rhythm of this beat.

Based out of Chicago, Redmoon Theater is an interactive, spectacle-loving, experimental theater institution that frequently travels to create site-specific, exciting outdoor performances. For over 24 years, Redmoon Theater has performed for more than 380,000 people in 49 different neighborhoods globally.

Redmoon Theater will kick off performances tomorrow, Thursday, June 11, playing through Saturday, June 13, for the Play Time Exhibit Celebration from 6-10pm.
