Toledo natives Oliver Cooper and Joe Burke are releasing Four Dogs, an independent feature film they co-wrote and produced, through online streaming service Vimeo VOD.
The film stirred up a warm buzz when it premiered at 2013’s Los Angeles Film Festival because it illustrates, largely kitsch-free, a life that’s at times uncomfortably similar to Cooper’s.
“It's more of a look at my life a couple years prior, when I first moved to Los Angeles, living with my aunt, wanting to be an actor* but not really sure how to go about it,” Cooper said via email. “At the time of the shoot, over two years ago, I was living in my aunt’s house where we filmed the movie. We shot in my bedroom, there was no difference between real life and filming a scene.”
With Four Dogs film, Burke, makes his feature directorial debut—he’s directed numerous short(er) films. He credits his experience editing other features with giving him the necessary chops to step up to longform cinema. “I have edited a couple other indie feature films for other filmmaker friends of mine, which was very helpful in learning the structure of making a full length movie,” Burke, who also edited Four Dogs, said by email.
Cooper also learned some lessons: “I learned that filming a movie in your house is a crazy f*cking idea,” he said.
