Is the Kroger proposed for across from The Notre Dame campus what’s best for Toledo?

The best option for the Kroger expansion would be on its current site. In my early discussions with Kroger I expressed concern for the loss of the trees and the campus like setting. I suggested that the company design a store that could fit into the Notre Dame site’s current campus setting. The store has modified its designs in other communities to meet the request of the community, as well as the company’s needs. It is possible to find a better solution.

What restrictions, if any, should there be on food truck operation in downtown Toledo?

There should not be any restrictions on food trucks imposed by the City other than the current health code requirements. The food trucks, moving around downtown this summer, added a great vibe to downtown at lunch time. The trucks took my suggestion and set up in front of Government Center allowing for the people in that part of downtown to be able to patronize the trucks.

Do you find the wildflowers by the Toledo Zoo a hazard and unsightly or a beautiful aesthetic of urban wildlife? * Please include the phrase, “compostable matter” in your answer.

I am more patient than others I knew they would become a “beautiful aesthetic of urban wildlife” in the future. The problem was not having signage explaining that it takes time. It was truly unfortunate that they were cut down too soon and became compostable matter. I applaud the Toledo Zoo staff for their leadership in this.

What will you do to avoid another “water crisis”?

This summer, I did just that. By having and reporting the daily testing, in spite of the 10-day testing cycle rule set out by the Ohio EPA, the water was always safe to drink and use from the tap.

How necessary is it for the city to fund the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio?

It is necessary for the city to fund CCNO at its rightful share and the City of Toledo is committed to do just that! Additionally, the funds (taxes) that Lucas County uses for its payment of the jail costs come from Toledo, Lucas County residents, not from non-Toledo, Lucas County residents.

What is your stance on the recently approved cannabis ordinance?

I have directed the law director to represent the City of Toledo to defend against the suit filed by the Ohio Attorney General. The people of Toledo have spoken overwhelmingly through the ballot. As Mayor, it is my responsibility to uphold the will of the people and the laws of the City.

What are your thoughts on the proposed open container entertainment districts?

The open container entertainment districts will be an added bonus and new way for further reviving the entertainment districts. The City of Toledo is fully aware of what must be done to ensure the public safety and well being, while allowing new and innovative developments. I am excited.
