Despite the COVID-19 shutdown, hundreds of Toledoans still rely on TARTA to get to work or other essential obligations every day. In an effort to protect both the public and its own employees, TARTA announced on April 9 that all riders would now be required to wear a cloth or paper mask while riding Toledo buses.

The policy shift took effect on April 11, and the TARTA website offers links to resources where individuals can learn how to make their own facial coverings at home.

The move to require masks is the latest in a line of policy changes aimed at protecting bus drivers and riders. TARTA announced in late March that all buses would operate at “Level III” service, meaning that they would run on a Saturday schedule, with lineups beginning at 9am and ending at 6 daily.

In addition, the majority of riders will use the rear entrance of the bus, while elderly and ADA riders will board from the front, in an effort to encourage social distancing. The TARTA Transit Hub has also been closed since March 18.
