Alice’s Restaurant, the 1969 cult classic staring Arlo Guthrie and Pat Quinn, follows the musician and his friend Alice on a seemingly endless journey through a divided America during the Vietnam War. The film is based on Arlo’s song, “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” a lively walking blues folk song that made a name for Guthrie. After being arrested over a misunderstanding, Arlo finds himself in the county jail, in front of the war board and then becomes a surprised groom in his own wedding. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for best director but lost out to John Schleslinger’s masterpiece Midnight Cowboy.
