When BettyJane Rahn, Director of Marketing at Mitchell Dermatology, offered to do an image scan of the sun vascular damage I’ve received over the years, several things came to my mind. First, I grew up on the sun-blazed beaches of the Florida panhandle (that’s right, I am not from here). Second, my down-to-earth, hippie-like parents didn’t make me use sunscreen until I was 15. And third, the only reason we started using sunscreen at that time was because my dad was diagnosed with melanoma. Even then, I rarely used it. So here was an opportunity to see the real damage done.
Connie Poulos with Glytone was actually conducting the imaging and was incredibly professional. Plus, I was informed that this wasn’t a cancer test, but more like a procedure that would tell me what I could do to fix past mistakes. The process was easy, and the camera looked like something you’d see at the eye doctors’ office. I rested my chin in front of the lens, it took two pictures, and then a pleasant-sounding chime signaled that I was done. The images that appeared were scary, weird and revealing.
Yes, I had sun damage, but it wasn’t that bad. Which is great, because besides the occasional sunscreen, I never put anything on my face—and that includes soap. Dirty-faced and smiling, I was pleased with the results. Connie and BettyJane told me what could really help improve whatever damage I had.
I was given their top-notch products of Glytone Sunscreen for the morning and Avene RetrinAL Crème for the evening. I immediately thought of what other guys, more so my friends, would say about me using a product mostly purchased by women. But the challenge still stood, and I accepted it, of course, in the interests of science and this continuing editorial segment. I would use this product every morning and night for two months and see what changes may occur. I am assured the results will be fantastic. But, I guess time will tell.
