Festival Fashion 2014

Festivals are the perfect place to go for the latest and greatest trends in fashion. With this year’s unpredictable weather, colder-than-average temperatures, blazing sun and crowds in the thousands, festival-goers did not disappoint in the name of fashion.

The Toledo City Paper’s music aficionados attended a handful of festivals over the past few months, each with an impressive list of performers, from Jack White and Nickel Creek to The Insane Clown Posse. The festivals had their own distinct and eclectic demographic with diverse, creative and eccentric outfits. Here is what we discovered:

  • Bunbury Music Festival
    Cincinnati, Ohio

With headliners Paramore, The Flaming Lips and New Politics, lovers of indie rock flocked to the hills of Cincinnati. Bunbury fashion included a lot of fun accessories, from floral headbands to body paint and strange looking hats.
  • Faster Horses Country Music and Camping Festival
    Brooklyn, Michigan

This country music festival is more of a party than anything else. Tim McGraw, Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert brought their die-hard fans together for a weekend of emotional, down-n-dirty and rustic tunes. The most popular clothing items throughout the three days were cowboy boots, cut-off jean shorts, tied-up flannel tops and the omnipresent cowboy hat.

  • Forecastle
    Louisville, Kentucky

This relatively small festival has finally made its mark on the radar, bringing an eclectic group of people together. There were the country and folk music lovers, amped to see Nickel Creek and Jason Isbell; old school rockers, there to see The Replacements; as well as metalheads excited to see Reignwolf and Slint. Adding to the mix of musical headliners, Beck, Outcast and Jack White definitely added to the festival attire.

  • The Governors Ball Music Festival
    Randall’s Island, New York

Jean shorts everywhere. And by everywhere, I mean that everywhere I looked, there was a group of girls all with a different version of cut-off jean shorts. Some of them were cheeky, while others opted for the more “high-waisted” 90s trend version. Yes, it was hot, and yes, shorts were the optimal choice for the weather and tanning of the legs, but when everywhere you turn your head, you see the same thing . . . Of course there were also your “typical” festies, wearing crazy outfits and body paint.

  • The Gathering of the Juggalos
    Thornville, Ohio

The choice of fashion was definitely individualistic. Everyone at The Gathering was proud to be there, and their attire displayed their sense of happiness. Juggalos (as ICP followers are dubbed), are a community, one filled with togetherness and acceptance. Wearing anything from Insane Clown Posse merchandise to homemade costume-like outfits to fishnets and lingerie, “The Gathering” festival fashion ran the gamut.
