After a thrilling nine months, it is time for the Toledo Symphony to prepare for the 2013-14 season, but not before closing their current run with a bang. The symphony to end the year is none other than Tchaikovsky’s 5th. In the tradition of ‘per aspera ad astra,’ the 5th rises from sorrow to triumph, and its conclusion combusts with all the triumph and bombast that Tchaikovsky is known for. The work was tremendously popular during World War II, after the Leningrad symphony played it in a live broadcast to London — while the city around was being bombed. If you were never lured by classical music, this is the performance you’ve been waiting for. There will be a repeat performance on Saturday, May 18. $34-22. 8pm. Peristyle Theater at the Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St. 419-246-8000. www.toledosymphony.com.—JS
