Overnight the city of Toledo announced that the Toledo water supply is unsafe to drink, containing high levels of microcystin, produced by algae in Lake Erie, our main water source. The water isn’t even safe to boil, as the heat will not remove or destroy the toxins. Grocery stores are already reporting a shortage of bottled water as people line up to buy a safe alternative to the public supply.
The city recommended:
● Do not drink the water. Alternative water should be used for drinking, making infant formula, making ice, brushing teeth and preparing food. Pets should not drink the water.
● Do not boil the water. Boiling the water will not destroy the toxins — it will increase the concentration of the toxins.
