Bowling Green’s The Casket Company start 2016 with a new album

Rust Belt rock is a self-made label (and pretty accurate description) for the music of The Casket Company. The Bowling Green-based heavy rock band has a sound akin to an old factory machine coming to life and generating melodic tones with its grinding gears.

“Everything about the Midwest influences who we are as a band and as individuals,” explained Alex Baird, vocalist and guitarist for The Casket Company. “It’s the perfect storm for creating dirty, angry rock and we love it.” You can experience the dirty and angry rock for yourselves by picking up the band’s newly released album.

Fever, the debut album from The Casket Company, was released on Bandcamp on New Year's Eve. Baird said that the date was chosen “because we wanted to show our ‘fresh start’ in the new year. The new album captures the sound of the band very well and we wanted that to be what we project in 2016.” That sound is the consistent and almost mechanical drive to the music produced by Baird, bassist Chris Deidrick, and drummer Randall Williams.

New Year, New Album

The album’s title track “Fever”, which begins the album and is the first single off it, is a microcosm of the rest of the tracks. The vocal harmonies, driving guitar, and consistent drums are hallmarks of every song. This consistency comes from Glass Arrow, the studio where Fever was recorded. “Jordan (Disorbo, owner/producer of The Glass Arrow) is a brilliant engineer. He really helped us shape our vision and bring Fever to life” said Baird. “We couldn't be happier about the end product.”

Other aspects of the band start to emerge as the album goes on. There’s a softness in the middle with the track “Red, Then White”. The acoustic guitar and simpler drums sound like they’re coming from a different band, but there’s enough Casket Company soul to maintain the consistency of the rest of the album.

To finish things off, Baird flexes his vocals for the poem-like “The End of Everything, Reversed”. Set to a grinding guitar strum, the vocals start, like most of the album, at an emotional growl before gradually turning into a guttural scream reminiscent of Kurt Cobain’s heavier work.

If you’d like to see The Casket Company live, there’s plenty of opportunities to see them in the coming months. In Toledo alone, The Casket company will be coming to The House of Trial on February 20th and  Realm on March 19th. Plus, Baird discussed how the future looks bright for The Casket Company; “We are already in pre-production for our follow up album. We're very excited to see where 2016 takes us.”
