In this musical with folk, bluegrass, and gospel melodies, the titular character has a disfigurement that she will do anything to have healed— even if it means putting her faith in the hands of a remote televangelist. Violet is hoping for miraculous healing. The musical is based on Doris Betts’ short story, “The Ugliest Pilgrim.”
