Hearts at Work

Tony Rasczyk is doing what it takes to make a difference. Toledo native Rascyk, general manager of Consign It Home Interiors, has masterminded the annual Heart & Soul fundraiser for the past seven years, which benefits area mental-health organizations. And this year’s edition, on Saturday, February 5, promises to be the best yet.

“Myself and my good friend, Sally Binard, started this event,” Rasczyk says. The two were neighbors, living in nearby condos downtown. “I knew her from her work with David’s House, and throughout the community,” he says. The two shared a concern about community mental health issues. “We just thought it was a way to make a difference,” Rasczyk says.

Eyes wide open

Rasczyk’s concern wasn’t abstract. “I had a family member who was diagnosed with schizophrenia,” he says. “I’ve seen firsthand what people go through, and the stigma involved.” Rasczyk emphasizes that one in four families has at least one member affected by mental illness, a fact that Heart & Soul events have driven home for him. “Once I started doing this event,” he says, “it opened my eyes.”

The Heart & Soul fundraisers have been a resounding success. “I’d never done anything like this,” Rasczyk says, “I hadn’t been to many fundraisers.” But in the event’s first year, with only word of mouth, Rasczyk and Binard were able draw 100 people and raise over $5000. Last year’s fundraiser brought nearly 300, and raised $22,000.

Heartfelt success

The 2011 Heart & Soul fundraiser benefits Harbor and the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital, both past beneficiaries. while adding the Thomas M. Wernert Center, a Woodruff Avenue community center which provides mental health and peer support. “Last spring I was reading about them. They’re a great organization,” Rasczyk says.

Heart & Soul, held in the Suites Level Lounge at Fifth Third Field, includes dinner, entertainment, and a cash bar.

A silent auction will feature items donated by local organizations. “There are items ranging from $10 to $20 up to hundreds of dollars,” Rasczyk says. “There’s something for everybody.” Saturday, February 5. 6:30-10pm. $40 per person. See www.heartandsoultoledo.com, or call 419-381-1717.
