Border battles

Moving beyond the strictly local show that comprised the first 95 years of the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition, TAA has expanded applicant eligibility to a 150-mile radius. Out of 462 applicants, 28 regional artists were chosen. A theme, touching on urban and suburban class struggle and war, marks a striking change from the longstanding format of individual, unrelated works.

Opening party 6:30-9pm Friday, November 21. Through January 3. Curatorial and Artist Talk 3-4pm Saturday, November 22. Toledo Museum of Art Canaday Gallery, 2445 Monroe St. 10am-4pm Tuesday and Wednesday; 10am-9pm Thursday-Friday; 10am-5pm Saturday; noon-5pm Sunday. 419-255-8000. toledomuseum.org.

Rejects can find refuge in the TAA’s longstanding, concurrent tradition of the Salon des Refuses, sponsored by PRIZM Creative Community. Offering solace and space, the Salon will feature artists that were rejected from the TAA show (see above). Just a walk across the street, will allow viewers to enjoy the juxtaposition of the two displays. Pieces will be for sale and prizes will be awarded for People’s Choice.

Opening Reception, 6-10pm Friday, November 21, Awards Assembly at 8:45pm. Gallery hours: 9am-4pm Monday-Friday; Closed holidays. Through January 8. The Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood Ave. 419-931-8732. myprizm.com Free
