Thumbtack Gives Ohio B+ At Best

Ohio received a B+ rating in a new report issued today by ThumbTack, a mobile concierge service. Studied in conjunction with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the report suggests that Ohio excels in its employment, labor and hiring practices while its ease of hiring was given the lowest survey score.

These results beg the question: could the labor laws that are designed to protect employees and potential hires also be inhibiting the ease of hiring?

Jon Lieber, Chief Economist at Thumbtack, summarizes the report: "After a two-month survey of thousands of small business owners nationwide, we've heard directly from Ohio's small businesses that the state could do more to support them. Creating a business climate that is welcoming to small, dynamic businesses is more important than ever, and Ohio has more to do to get there."

Survey data was compiled by city and county, with no conclusive data collected from Toledo. The survey does not include responses from the retail, manufacturing, or agricultural sectors. Of the 300+ Ohio businesses that participated, only 14 companies from Lucas County responded. Survey responses for 2014 are now closed, and will reopen again for the 2015 report.

ThumbTack connects consumers with professional services based on business ratings and project price-points. The service referred over $2 billion of business since July 2013.
