Leave your sweatbands, gym socks and tennis shoes at home.
ProMedica’s A Bite for the Fight, celebrating its fifth consecutive year, gives back in a different way than other philanthropic races. Participants are encouraged to come with an empty stomach.
The menu
A Bite for the Fight is a one-mile walk around ProMedica’s Flower Hospital. Along the way, tents will be set up with treats for participants to enjoy— a way for local businesses to advertise and for the public to discover new favorite foods. The number of tents featured along the mile-long walk is in the double digits, so there will be plenty to go around.
Take a few steps to enjoy a hot and flavorsome spoonful of award-winning soup from Zoup! Trek a tiny bit more and bite into a hearty sandwich from Tom+Chee. Meander around the corner and top it off with a mixture of chocolate and peanut butter from Marsha’s Homemade Buckeyes.
If those are not mouth-watering enough, there will also be fare provided by Fricker’s Sylvania, Country Lane BBQ, The Oasis, Barry Bagels, Chick-fil-A Toledo, Amie’s Pizza Factory, Ye Olde Durty Bird, Toppers Frozen Yogurt and more.
Other entertainment will be featured during the walk. Kids (and adults with a child’s heart) will also be able to look into the ProMedica helicopter, which will fly in and land during a 15-minute presentation and prayer before the walk begins. (The helicopter will be featured as long as they do not have a call.)
The cause
A Bite for the Fight was started five years ago by cancer survivor Jason Lankey, who with his wife Kate, wanted to help patients who were less fortunate than them.
The money raised from A Bite for the Fight will fund the Hickman Cancer Center, assisting patients without insurance, transportation and more.
“[It funds] anything that a nurse or a doctor identifies as a need for that patient… so they can get the treatment that they so deserve,” Hickman Cancer Center Manager Elaine Bender said.
The event attracts a lot of survivors and teams are welcome for anyone interested in supporting the cause.
“The grub is great, but the best part of this event is the camaraderie,” Bender said,
“We get to see patients that maybe we haven’t seen in years… We [also] get to see family members of patients we’ve lost and remember their loved ones,” she added. “We get real close with our patients and their families so it’s really wonderful for not only nurses, but the entire medical staff.”
