Dodgeball. A staple of most every American childhood gym class. The source of a very funny movie starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. And now, the inspiration for a whole tour of competitive events, which will make a stop in the Toledo area.
USA Dodgeball, a national governing body for the sport, has begun its inaugural season of the USA Dodgeball Premier Tour, which sees 20 teams— men’s, women’s and coed— compete in a series of regional matchups. A Round 1 Tournament of the tour will be held at the Owens Community College Student Health and Activities Center in Perrysburg on Saturday, April 16.
The tour involves matchups using both “no-sting rubber” and more traditional 8.5” rubber ball games, and all regional rounds are being held with an eye on a National Championship competition tentatively scheduled for October.
The origins of the sport of dodgeball are widely disputed, with some claiming variations on the game reach at least as far back as 500 B.C. A number of variations and similar games exist around the globe. USA Dodgeball’s tour stop in the Toledo area comes not too long before April 27, International Dodgeball Day, which is really a thing according to Wikipedia.
