The darkened 4,000 square foot Q-zar arena pulsates with techno music and glows with neon and black lights flashing. Armed with laser guns and clad in lightstudded vests, the red team discusses battle strategy before fading into the swirling fog to stalk the blue team. Your heart races, all your senses are highly attuned and you are fully engaged in this tangible, fun experience. Each step takes you into the challenging maze of curving walls, dead ends, strategic blind spots and vantage points to ward off or launch attacks. Taking aim, you score by laser-tagging the enemy and by infiltrating their guarded headquarters while they attempt to do the same.
Skillful objectives
Your team wins if you have skillfully outmaneuvered and out-tagged your opponents. Sensors in the vests and overhead fixtures at each headquarters, are activated when hit with a laser beam. The ‘hit’ is then recorded in the computer scoring system. After the game each player, and each team, gets a detailed printout of total scores–who was hit, how many times and where.
Optimal experience
For the best game, Jenny Campanian, a part time manager, advises, “Play at least two rounds—the first round is all learning curve. Be sure to wear dark clothing and keep moving for the best action and suspense.” She further notes, “This game is popular with all ages and has become a team building activity forvarious organizations. It’s also a favorite component of bachelor parties, after prom, birthdays, anniversaries and for friends looking to have a good time.” Q-zar, at 5836 Monroe St. Sylvania, has arcade games including the original House of the Dead (zombies rule!) and a small climbing wall.
