A fascinating examination of one of the oldest pieces of water-based transportation— and why it’s so hard to find examples of it— lie at the center of the presentation “Missing the Boat: Ancient Dugout Canoes in the Mississippi/Missouri Watershed,” a lecture sponsored by the Toledo society of the American Institute of Architects. Peter H. Wood, Emeritus Professor at Duke University, will talk about the recent unearthing of dugout canoes that are hundreds of years old at a site near St. Louis, the history of their creation and use, and why they disappeared for so long.
