Toledo’s own Bliss Nova release debut EP

In the single from their new EP, Bliss Nova asks the question, “Do you feel?”

If you didn’t before, you definitely will after hearing this otherworldly group of tracks.

Bliss Nova was formed by brothers Joel and Daniel Trzcinski. Born and raised in the Toledo area, their mother is a classically trained pianist who taught lessons on the weekends. The brothers grew up in a house filled with music.

The Trzcinskis are already part of successful local band, Nathan Roberts & The New Birds. With that band currently on hiatus, they felt compelled to keep making music. Out of this, Bliss Nova was born.

“We weren’t even sure we were going to do an EP,” Joel Trzcinski said. “We thought maybe we would put out one or two songs, and then he [Daniel Trzcinski] kept writing better and better songs.”

“The sound shaped itself,” Daniel Trzcinski added.

Sonic Feel

Listening to their new EP, Do You Feel, is like diving into a pool you never want to leave. It contains 6 ethereal tracks, varying in mood: “Nothing to Lose,” “Interlude,” “Do You Feel,” “My Nightmare,” “All Right,” and “Different.”

The first track, “Nothing to Lose”, is upbeat, with optimistic lyrics such as “I’ve got nothing to lose/Being honest with you.” This leads into the whispery “Interlude” which is a bridge into the EP’s danceable single, “Do You Feel.” The mood of the EP shifts going into “My Nightmare”, where the dance beat continues, but the lyrics surprise by shifting into more melancholy territory, “I’ve done everything wrong/And everything’s my fault.” With “All Right,” this edgier introspection continues with the lyrics “But it’s fine/I can smile/Every once in a while.” The EP ends with “Different”, which is filled with hazier sounds and beats that culminate in a bittersweet resignation through lyrics like “Erase me completely/Erase me, oh please/ ‘Cause I’m different than you are.” The EP as a whole is a journey of changing tempos and shifting emotions.

Though the sound of Bliss Nova is unique, they’re clearly influenced by contemporary artists like Kindness and Toro Y Moi.

“Both of those artists gave me the idea for the off kilter beat in “Do You Feel,” Daniel Trzcinski said. “The words fell into place later. I try to pull from a feeling I’ve experienced. It starts with a beat, something that feels good…then a melody. Even though I didn’t plan on it, the lyrics ended up coming together cohesively.”

Taking it on the road

Bliss Nova hasn’t played live yet, but plan to tour in the fall to promote their new EP.

“If it’s working, then let’s keep going,” Joel Trzcinski said.

Describing their new EP, Daniel Trzcinski stated, “It’s like drifting in and out of a dream.”
