Love, death and music

One of the towering centerpieces of opera comes to the Peristyle stage  as Toledo Opera brings to life Giacomo Puccini’s masterwork Turandot on Friday, May 11. Since its premiere in 1926 (a year after Puccini’s death), Turandot has moved audiences with its dark and sweeping vision and exotic Asian setting. It’s the tale of a young prince willing to face death in order to win the cold heart of the eponymous Chinese princess, with music that has resonated for nearly a century — including the all-time classic tenor aria “Nessun dorma.” The show is directed by Marc Verzatt, and accompanied by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Stefan Sanderling. 8pm. 2445 Monroe St. 419-255-7464. www.toledoopera.org.
