Two years after the election of Barack Obama, as Americans were patting themselves on the back over how far our country had come, Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow hit like a punch in the gut. In honor of its tenth anniversary, the Northwest Ohio Democratic Socialists of America will host a discussion of the book on February 24. In The New Jim Crow, Alexander argued that the politics of racial segregation hadn’t really gone anywhere, but were now institutionalized in the form of mass incarceration and the stigma attached to felons— a disproportionate number of which are African American men.
