Fort-to-Port adventure

Have you ever wanted to test your kayaking mettle by embarking on a leave-it-all-behind adventure? You can, by joining the Northwest Ohio River Runners (NWORR) as they paddle the Fort to Port (Fort Wayne to Toledo) kayaking route, made famous by local outdoorsman Steven Pollock. The event takes places over Memorial Day weekend and ends Tuesday, May 27. To get more info, sign up (registration is required) and pick up a list of necessary equipment, attend the next NWORR meeting April 22 at 6:30pm at the Friendship Community Center (2930 131st St.). “It is going to be a physical test, but also an exciting way to experience the beautiful Maumee River,” said organizer John Heinl. The four-day trip includes up to eight hours of daily paddling at a steady pace, followed by overnight camping. The trip is not for novices but for folks used to long hours of paddling in slow and fast-moving water, Heinl said. Visit nworr.org for details on all activities open to the public.

Great Strides

National Walking Week is March 31-April 2, and you can celebrate by rounding up a friend or two and immersing yourselves in the first blush of spring along some of Toledo’s best pathways. For maps, locations and more suggestions, visit metroparkstoledo.com.

Lights out for Earth

Unite with people around the globe during “Earth Hour,” Saturday, March 29. Turn out your lights from 8:30-9:30pm (EST) in a symbolic gesture to raise awareness for our planet. More info at visit earthhour.org.
