Tent City Provides Assistance to Those in Need

Tent City provides more than just tents to the homeless.

The event that started 34 years ago providing tents to those in need by 1Matters takes place this weekend, Oct. 18 through Oct. 20 at the Civic Center Mall on Jackson St.

Started in 1990, our annual Tent City brings the entire community together to provide solutions, 1 at a time,” event organizers wrote on the website. “This has evolved into a weekend-long festival of compassion where volunteers provide medical, dental, food, clothing, employment, the return to housing, critical documents, haircuts and other services to those in need.”

Every year, over 1000 people are served during Tent City, providing vital assistance to those in need.

Registration begins at 12 pm on Friday Oct. 18 for the weekend long event. Dinner will be held at 5 pm.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, breakfast will be served at 7 am. The medical tent services will be available from 8 am to 3 pm, where people can access many medical services, including medical evaluations, on-site doctor and prescriptions, dental exams, oral screenings and hygiene children’s preventive dental fluoride treatments, flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, STD mitigation, Medicaid enrollment, community health workers/healthcare navigators vision screening, reading glasses distribution, women’s health services: cancer screenings, mammography, OB/GYN screenings and check ups, adult and children literacy programs and follow up through neighborhood health association.
