Who can forget 60’s fashion – leaping from the conservative 50’s to the tidal wave of fashion innovations that became wardrobe essentials in the 70’s, it was a revolution. Today, over forty years later, we still see remnants of the styles of that ‘forward thinking’ era.
The reason; the AMC drama Mad Men, based on the activity in a New York advertising agency, has taken television by storm. Much of today’s dialogue concerns the fashion trends mimicking the series.
Reminiscent of that time, we are seeing slim dresses in bold, bright floral, red lipstick, miniskirts, pointy-toed shoes and kitten heels, structured handbags and a return to wearing hosiery. The world watched as the Kennedys came to power with Jackie as their fashion star — every woman wanted to emulate her. Everything she wore was replicated for housewives throughout the country while younger females embraced the dramatic change of the time period – mini skirts, pants, and go-go boots – a fashion revolt.
Because today’s fashion is ever-so-casual, many people wear jeans and t-shirts to work, a return to an era where civility and good taste in clothing is refreshing. It is amazing that a simple show can jump start a fashion transformation so easily. We tune in to Mad Men not only for the great storyline but also to see Joan, Peggy and Betty’s latest looks.
The influence is not lost on the fashion industry – Banana Republic has used the show to develop a style trend in its stores. Miuccia Prada’s spring show was also ablaze in nostalgic glamour, and more stores are following suit, all reasons why we are seeing softer element in fashion this spring.
Jane Wurth from Ragazza in Perrysburg and Sylvania affirms the popularity of the classic looks from the series. She explains that Joseph Ribkoff styles are timeless and enjoying the notoriety from the series. “Mad Men looks are popular because women love classic styles and always feel pretty when they step out in a simple, but elegant, ensemble," Jane said.
For a woman with style, the options are limitless. You have the choice of slim or pleated skirts, soft floral or bold prints, contemporary drama or silky creations – it’s a mad, mad fashion world out there – the revolution continues.
