Miss Julie

A story of power relationships, the Swedish play Miss Julie heralds the premiere of University of Toledo Assistant Professor of Theater Daniel Thobias’ contemporary translation. Associate Professor of Theater Cornel Gabara will direct the story of Miss Julie, a modern woman urged to rely on her class power, and one of her father’s mysterious, well-traveled and older servants. Spy College

The Ohio Theatre will host an all-day event in celebration of the world premiere of Toledo filmmaker Michael DeSanto’s latest film, Spy College. The film follows the double life of Nick Dasher, a typical, head-of-the-class college student who also happens to be a spy-in-training by night. The event will feature screenings of Desanto’s shorts and videos, including his first independent feature-length film, Max Anderson, Private Eye. Enjoy spy- and college-themed drinks for those ages 21+. A Q&A with the cast and crew will follow the show. $10. Noon, short film screenings; 4pm Spy College screening. The Lights Before Christmas

Since 1986, the Toledo Zoo has been brightening up the dark winter nights with its Lights Before Christmas. Thousands of lights illuminate the walkways and animals, creating a unique experience for zoo-goers. New this year is an ice slide (for an additional fee) and live reindeer (no, they aren’t Santa’s). Through January 4. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 3-8pm Sunday-Thursday; 3-9pm Friday and Saturday. $13/adults, $10/seniors aged 60+, $10/children ages 2-11, free/under age 2. An all-star local lineup takes the stage at Mark Mikel’s Annual Ultra Concert. Presented by Monclovia Records and coinciding with the release of Mark’s first solo album in 7 years, the concert will also be the debut of his latest collection of tunes, “A Peace Sign Is Only A Finger Away". As part of the Valentine Theatre’s Art House Film Series, enjoy a showing of The Rules of the Game (1939), directed by Jean Renoir. Set in the French countryside at the onset of World War II, the film tells the story of a famous aviator, who laments the absence of the woman he loves to an admiring crowd.
