The terror of Halloween is quickly approaching. With Glacity Theatre Collective’s upcoming production of “Nightmares Come in Threes,”  both horror and theater lovers can experience a unique production, sure to leave everyone satisfyingly scared.

Risky business

Glacity Theatre Collective, a nonprofit theatre company that started productions in 2007, prides itself in creating thought-provoking and high-quality performances. Tying unusual and often lesser-performed plays in with original works, this unconventional company wants audiences to be surprised by their staged risk taking.

For the third year in a row, GTC presents an original Halloween special, this year featuring three shows in one production. Nightmares Come in Threes is made up of three 20-minute original one-act plays, with each segment inspired by its playwright’s own nightmares.

A freaky fun time

Megan Aherne, one of the two writer/directors for the production, has been with GTC since the inception of these annual horror productions. Having co-written and co-directed the past two plays, For the Devil Tells Me So and The Satanarium, she has high expectations for this year’s show, claiming “the greatest reward for doing shows like this is when audience members come to me and say ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life’.”

The first one-act, “Fix”, focuses on a moment in the life of a drug pusher. Aherne describes it as, “a bloody, campy, wild ride of a show reminiscent of the drug deal scene from ‘Boogie Nights’.” The second one-act, “Dolls”, is also written/directed by Aherne and showcases a deranged man who is obsessed with baby dolls. Lastly, “Pink”, written/directed by Edmund Lingan, is a cartoon-like musical full of rituals and furries— a subculture of people who enjoy dressing up as stuffed animals.

Further pushing boundaries, Nightmares Come in Threes will incorporate audience interaction. Actors might call up an audience member to join them onstage.

“I hope the audience has a freaky, fun time,” states Aherne, “with these performances, we’re not seeking some kind of catharsis, but rather an unexpected, completely different experience than a traditional theatre or haunted house.”
