A day for romantic readers

Learn the language of love, as the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library hosts
the Maumee Valley Romance Writers of America for their second annual Spring
Book Lovers Event, at the Sanger Branch on Saturday, March 26. The MVRWA
is a networking and support group for area writers of romance. This event is a
chance for lovers of romance to meet nationally published authors who may just
be their neighbors. Guests include Devin McKee, Shay Lacy, Tracy Madison, Tori
Carrington, and Wendy Burke. Free. 10-2pm. 3030 W. Central Ave.
419-259-5370. www.toledolibrary.org

Waste land

In a world of growing scarcity
and rising food prices, we are lucky
to live in a prosperous nation. But a
great deal of the available bounty goes
tragically to waste. On Tuesday, March
22, The University of Toledo Urban
Affairs Center presents Jonathan
Bloom, author of American Wasteland:
How America Throws Away Nearly
Half of its Food (and what we can
do about it). Bloom presents the
economic and humanitarian case for
better management of our food supply.
Augsburg Lutheran Church. 1342
Sylvania Ave. Free. 7pm. uac.utoledo.edu

A voice for teachers

The Women’s Initiative, United Way’s annual
Spring Event, is a can’t-miss occasion for women
to meet, network and explore new ways to build
community. This year’s event on Wednesday, April
6, features an inspiring keynote speaker, San
Francisco teacher and author Nínive Calegari,
who co-founded 826 Valencia, the San Francisco
nonprofit that encourages creative writing in youth.
She also co-authored the 2006 book Teachers Have
It Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries
of America’s Teachers, which utilizes stories of
struggling teachers to send a timely message in an
era of shrinking education budgets. 5pm. Owens
Corning World Headquarters. 1 Owens Corning Pkwy.
