What It’s About: After the passing of the Pope, Vatican leaders must now choose a new head for the Roman Catholic Church. They elect Melville, a devout, highly regarded cardinal who loves God and the Church in equal amounts. Just one problem—he doesn’t want to be Pope, so he escapes into the streets of Rome, with Church leaders hot on his trail.
What We Like: Astute foreign film buffs will recognize Melville as the wonderful Michel Piccoli, who has made a career starring in dozens of classic international films by such directors as Ferreri and Bunuel. Piccoli delivers another classic performance as the hapless, reluctant Melville, whose evasion of the Catholic Church entangles him in all sorts of mayhem. And relax, Catholic readers, this film is not spitting blasphemy or poking fun at the Vatican or the Church. Seriously.
