Local Sheet Metal Workers Union is going the distance for boxers

City Councilman and Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 33 Business Representative Matt Cherry pointed to a painted wall at the Soul City Boxing Club and quoted the slogan: “Stop waiting for things to happen. Go out and make them happen.”

In the midst of Phase 1 of the the Sheet Metal Workers Local 33 Soul City Boxing Club heating project, which broke ground on Wednesday, September 21, Cherry said,  “I love that sign. It represents exactly the type of volunteer project the Local 33 wants to support.”

Soul City Boxing Club is a nonprofit organization with the primary goal of providing, “… a safe and stable place for kids of all ages to go after school and on the weekend.”  In addition to a variety of fitness programs, the club provides tutoring, meals and mentorship. Located on Junction Avenue in Toledo, it has been credited with helping to lower the local crime rate by 30%.

The union is currently completely rebuilding the Soul City Boxing facility’s heating system, a project estimated to be in excess of $25,000. Materials are funded and supplied by local Toledo businesses VM Systems and M & M Heating & Cooling, with labor and design supplied by the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 33.

Their heating system has been in disarray for some time now,” explained Cherry. “Our contractors, our union and our members have stepped up to change this.”
