Black Girls Rock in Exemplary Service Celebration

The Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to host Black Girls Rock in Exemplary Service Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 17, 12 pm at The Pinnacle in Maumee. 

The event will honor “exemplary Black women, past and present,” celebrate the 116 years of the sorority, as well as honor the founders and area women for their impactful work in the greater Toledo region. 

Eight women from the area will receive awards for their valuable contributions to the Toledo community.

Women honored include, Jovita James Robertson receiving the Legacy of Excellence Award, Curtina Keetion receiving the Shot Caller Award, Yvonne Mitcham receiving the Trailblazer Award, Darlene Sweeney-Newbern receiving the Social Humanitarian Award, Alissa Mauter receiving the Young Gifted and Black Award, Dr. Shanda Gore receiving the Community Change Agent Award, Bishop Dr. Pat McKinstry receiving the Icon Award and Anne Colbert Battles receiving the Sisterhood Award.

All of these powerful women have gone above and beyond in their respective fields and will be recognized for the impact they have made on the greater Toledo community.

The sorority is also asking for donations of non-perishable items for their program CHIPP, which stands for Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack.

The program provides weekend and holiday meals to children in need. Children enrolled in the program receive two breakfasts, two lunches and two snacks every Friday to eat over the weekend. 

Items accepted at the event include oatmeal, canned ravioli, apple sauce cups and boxed mac and cheese.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on the Howard University campus in 1908, becoming the first Greek-letter organization established by African-American women. The Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter was chartered in 1952 in Toledo. Since its establishment, the sorority has been a pillar to black women in the area.
