Contemporary artist Kara Walker creates art in a variety of media. In her 2005 series Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), recently acquired by the Toledo Museum of Art, Waker questions conventional, historical narratives about the War’s relationship to slavery. In the series of 15 works, Walker uses cut-paper silhouettes, layered atop wood engravings of Civil War scenes to create a powerful visual statement. Opens Saturday, June 17. Through October 22.
