Several of Toledo’s major sculptures are getting a refresh.
The Arts Commission’s Art in Public Places program will repair and restore three sculptures around the Glass City, including Kabuki Dancer, Vessel and Art Tatum Celebration Column.
Jerry Peart’s Kabuki Dancer (1984) was recently removed from it’s site at Levis Square Park to accommodate new construction. Over the years the sculpture has corroded in several aluminum areas as well as has light finish wear. It will receive repairs to the damaged aluminum portions and be repainted before they reinstall the sculpture in spring 2025.
Vessel (2020) by RDG Planning & Design was heavily damaged due to an auto accident in 2023. The sculpture is currently receiving repairs and refabrication and will be reinstalled to its original location once it is finished.
Cork Marcheschi’s Art Tatum Celebration Column (2009) has eroded over time, receiving damage to its original-coated finish and corrosion throughout the sculpture. It was removed on Oct. 16 to be fully disassembled for additional analysis. The sculpture will receive repairs to be reinstalled in spring 2025. Internal light fixtures will also be updated with the reinstallation of the sculpture.
