What It’s About: A mother (Tilda Swinton) tries to reassemble her life after her disturbed son suddenly embarks on a Columbine-style massacre at his high school. Based on the cult novel by Lionel Shriver.
What We Like: Prepare yourself, because this is thus far the most disturbing and thought-provoking film of 2012, and one of the best. Eva (Swinton) didn’t exactly want to become pregnant with Kevin (played by three magnificent young actors), who in turn didn’t ask to be brought into this insane world. From birth, Kevin and Eva are pitted against each other in a silent battle of wits and power, ranging from the darkly humorous to the terrifying. This film dares to question society’s sacraments about parenting and children and the results are thoroughly stunning—even if they may induce nightmares.
Now playing at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor.
