Catch a summer moment

Summertime is often about those little delectable moments that don’t take a lot of planning and just seem to pop up amidst our very hectic schedules. These moments become the memories we treasure the most. So indulge in a few easy, breezy activities this season.

Into the Woods/Under the Moon 5k Metroparks Series

Hit the trails at several metroparks for a noncompetitive family friendly 5K run or walk to enjoy the quiet freshness of a new morning or the lush darkness of a star and moon lit night. Each course will be marked and you can record your time with the unofficial clock at the finish lines. Metroparks interpreters will be present to point out some of morning and evening highlights nature has to offer. Night runners and walkers can decorate themselves with all things that glow. For all 5K locations, dates and times and to fill out the required registration ($5 fee) visit metroparkstoledo.com.

Outdoor Movies

The best way to watch a new release movie in the summer is under a starry night sky where you can cosy up in your car or step outside and stretch out on a blanket or lean back in a lawn chair. The best place locally to enjoy this is the fun 1950’s styled Sundance Kid Drive In Theatre. This is a perfect combination of a big screen experience, FM stereo sound, and cool evening breezes carrying the aroma of corn dogs, cotton candy and popcorn from the concession stand.

Screening are nightly, April through October. | 419-691-9668. | $9/adults, $3/ages 5-12, free/ages 4 and under. | The Sundance Kid Drive-in Theatre, 4500 Navarre Ave., Oregon. | 419-691-9668. greateasterntheatres.com

Bridge Roll

Hop on your bike and experience the Veteran’s Glass City Skyway Bridge from underneath. The VGC Bike Path is a unique, cool experience merging the incredible architectural undersides of the bridge structure with a wide curving, open paved trail. The gaps between the bridge’s overhead roadway and support pylons create a beautiful dappled sun and blue sky effect as you travel along the route. Pedal at a leisurely or moderate pace to accommodate several intersection stops as well as the rise and fall of the path. Park on Oneida St. (parking is permitted and free) then hit the trailhead at the corner of Lagrange St and the Greenbelt Pkwy. The first quarter mile of the trail is tree lined and more secluded and runs parallel to the GP before it takes you to the open expanse under the bridge.

Fish the Day Away

The free and little known public Bayshore Fishing Access Dock and Oregon Boat Launch has a well maintained boat ramp and parking. Walking out onto the adjacent floating dock offers glorious panoramic views of the sparkling Maumee Bay. The secluded Fishing Access Trail (on the northwest side of the parking lot) runs parallel to the Bayshore Power Plant. The .4 mile walk travels along a dirt pathway providing an up close interesting look at the plant. The trail opens to a small fishing dock surrounded by a very rocky and boulder strewn terrain shaded by locust and willows trees. Fish are big and abundant in this cove because of the power plant’s warm water discharge.
