"The Orphan Master's Son" – Adam Johnson: Never thought a book dealing with North Korean politics and (lack of) culture would be of interest to me, but this Pulitzer prize winning novel is incredibly intriguing. The first third of the book deals with Pak Jun Do, who is the orphan master's son and works for the military, but then abruptly "drops" from the storyline… or does he? It's a fascinating story of horrible prison camps, a forgotten movie star and the man who loves her as well as a pair of female American rowers, who row in the nude. It's the human element that keeps Johnson's novel all together—in spite of Kim Jong Il’s satanic presence throughout.—SJA
