The winners will be determined by a panel of three judges. The judges will base their decision on originality, form, language, grammatical skill and the creative interpretation or reflection of the writing.

The overall goal of the contest is to develop a connection between visual art and writing as said by Toledo Museum of Art’s Senior Public Relations Manager Doreen Cutway. Participants are encouraged to be creative and express their emotions through poetry.

Teachers for grade 6 though 12 can request for a guided tour of the museum that will include poetry writing for their students to do. Once students have their poetry they can decide on whether they wish to submit the poem into the contest for a chance to win one of the prizes.

Everyone from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan are invited to participate in the contest. If you are not confidant in your ability to write a poem for the contest the museum offers writing workshop with Lucas County Poet Laureate Jonie McIntire on Feb. 3 and March 17 before the contest closes.
