Toledo Extends Food Compost Program

Toledo’s food composting program will continue for an additional year.

Toledo renewed its pilot food composting program contract with GoZERO Ltd. for $35,000.

Last year, more than 67,000 pounds of food waste were composted, diverting them from the municipal landfill.

Curbside pickup is also being discussed, Megan Robson, director of the public service department said.

Currently, food waste can be dropped off at three locations, including Swan Creek Metropark, Glass City Metropark and Toledo Botanical Garden Metropark.

A fourth drop-off location is currently being developed.

Permissible food compost items include egg shells and paper packaging, dairy or oils, beans and nuts, plants, meat, bones, seafood and shellfish, fruit and vegetables, baked goods and pasta, coffee and tea grounds, food-soiled paper, wax paper, BPI Certified Plastics and ASTM 6400 compliant materials.
