The Toledo Celtics Women’s Rugby Team has become a beacon of empowerment and camaraderie in the Toledo area. Celebrating their 10th year, the team is stronger than ever and actively looking to expand its ranks.
Join the Team: No Experience Necessary
One of the team’s most welcoming aspects is that no prior rugby experience is needed to join. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the sport, the Toledo Celtics invite anyone 18 and older with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. “It’s all about teamwork and empowering one another,” says Team Captain Kristen Woods, who has been with the team for four years.
Practices are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at 99 Center St. in Toledo, Ohio. Interested individuals can also reach out via Facebook, Instagram, or email to learn more or attend a practice or game.
Teamwork and Empowerment
The Toledo Celtics Women’s Rugby Team is not just about playing rugby; it’s about the empowerment and support that comes from being part of a close-knit team. “Rugby is all about teamwork, and it’s important that you trust your teammates both on and off the field,” explains Coach Carol Kelly.
Currently in Division 3, the team aims to move to Division 2 by the fall to compete in the Midwest Championship. But beyond competition, the team values the sense of friendship that comes with being a part of the group. “We’re more than just teammates; we’re a close-knit group who rely on one another,” says Woods. After games and practices, the team bonds through social activities like watching rugby matches or going to the Toledo Art Museum.
Supporting the Community
The Toledo Celtics Women’s Rugby Team is deeply committed to giving back to the community. They participate in local parades like the Toledo Pride Parade and volunteer for various causes. One of their proudest achievements was contributing to the Bethany House food drive, helping those in need within the community.
As a nonprofit team, they also fundraise to support their activities. Through concession stands, donations, and other efforts, the team works together to raise the funds needed for jerseys and equipment. The team’s ability to provide new gear for everyone is a point of pride, creating a sense of unity among the members.
A Bright Future Ahead
Looking to the future, the Toledo Celtics are focused on raising awareness and continuing to grow their presence in Toledo. Their goal of reaching Division 2 is a major step forward, and they remain committed to expanding their team and encouraging others to join.
Their resilience, especially in the wake of COVID-19, is a testament to the team’s strength. The pandemic led to a loss of players, but the team’s ability to rebuild and grow stronger showcases the determination and spirit of its members.
Empowerment On and Off the Field
Kristen Woods sums it up, saying, “Being a part of this team is empowering. If you want to try something new, this is it. We’re welcoming and eager to teach new players.”
Coach Carol adds, “This team is a place where women can feel validated, supported, and empowered—both on and off the field. That sense of belonging is rare, and it’s what makes us unique.”
The Toledo Celtics Women’s Rugby Team is dedicated to creating strong athletes and strong women. If you’re looking for a team that values teamwork, empowerment, and community, the Toledo Celtics welcomes you with open arms.
