It’s Your Weekend to Startup Toledo Business

Startup Weekend Toledo will provide resources to creative local talent. During the weekend of October 2, LaunchPad Incubation on UT’s campus will help transform your dream into a business.

How Does It Work?

While the event depends on business proposals, it takes a team of diverse skills to turn an idea into a company. Collaboration is only improved by a variety of interests — bring a marketing perspective, your tech whiz background, or your love for pop culture into the business of your choice. “The whole startup ecosystem isn’t about the entrepreneur,” says Molly Thompson Reams, director of LaunchPad Incubation.

To begin, those with an entrepreneurial idea will make a pitch to fellow participants. From there, like-minded individuals will form teams around which ideas they most enjoy.

The concepts will truly evolve on Saturday, as the building process will only be interrupted by food breaks.

On Sunday, a panel of judges will hear teams present their developed business. Given the proper choices and effort, your creation may be given the tools to change Toledo's economy. While this presentation brings the weekend to an end, it could serve as your beginning.

Brandy Wimberly, Director of Digital Marketing at Interrupt, points out that Google was founded in 1998, and has quickly become the center of our online activity. She poses the question, “Why can’t we build the next Google, right here in Toledo?”

Even if your idea doesn’t take off, you will come away impacted and inspired by a diverse set of local speakers, team members, and coaches.

Room For Impact

The Toledo business landscape provides access to real estate, investors, and excited minds. Also, if you’re looking to launch a tech product or service, it hardly matters where you are based. One of our local resources is the event’s venue — LaunchPad Incubation is “the heart of startup culture in Toledo,” notes Thompson Reams.

Despite the “startup” label, technology and internet companies are only one option. You’re encouraged to share any of your concepts. T-shirt and junk drawer companies have taken off in past events, which occurred in 2012 and 2013.

As a community, we cannot rely on jobs to simply pop up. “There’s a mentality that the city has to create jobs, that’s not how it works,” advises Wimberly. Startup Weekend Toledo hopes to build companies which create jobs for one another in the community. This event will benefit you as a professional, and in turn, Toledo. A city’s identity is defined by it’s citizens. Therefore, each one of us should consider building the changes we want to see, and developing a stronger economy will promote a positive attitude.
