A Northwest Ohio native, Martha Conway revisits her roots and the legacy of Ohio in her new novel, Thieving Forest. Conway returns to the merciless landscape of Ohio’s Great Black Swamp in 1806. A work of historical fiction, Thieving Forest is a compelling pioneer story detailing the life of recently orphaned Susanna Quiner’s search for her kidnapped sisters.
Mourning the loss of their parents to Swamp Fever, the five Quiner sisters navigate and survive the dangerous terrain after the novel opens as 17-year-old Susanna watches as her four older sisters are kidnapped by a band of the Potawatomi Indians.
Engaging strong, dynamic woman characters, Thieving Forest moves quickly with poetic styles incorporating dark themes. Despite the desolate nature of Susanna’s life and threatening environment, Conway maintains an enjoyable tone that surprises the reader with brief bits of humor.
Conway brings her historical knowledge into this debut novel to make a compelling and well researched page-turner. A fiction teacher at Stanford University's Online Writer’s Studio, Conway has been immersed within the literary community through writing, editing and teaching.
